Northwest Horizons

Throughout my high school career at Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro, N.C., I worked for the student-run newspaper, Northwest Horizons. I started off as a staff writer and then I was promoted to holding the position of Arts & Culture Editor until May 2016 when I graduated.

 

Northwest Horizons (founded in 2007; formerly known as The Northwest Express) is the official newspaper of Northwest Guilford High School. It publishes four to five print issues a year under the auspices of the school, and it is entirely managed, written, edited and produced by journalism students with the guidance of a faculty adviser. In addition, the students maintain its website for up-to-date news. The staff determines its content and is responsible for its accuracy, fairness and objectivity.

 

Being a staff writer for Northwest Horizons allowed me to complete the following tasks:

• Met daily with staff, pitched story ideas, researched and interviewed sources, wrote articles on deadline that appear both online and in print, and captured photos to accompany story packages            

Being the Arts & Culture Editor for Northwest Horizons allowed me to complete the following tasks:

​

• Assisted leading an award-winning student news organization that reaches online, print, and broadcast news consumers in Guilford County, increasing news coverage across a campus of 2,124 students and the faculty and staff

 

• Collaborated daily with Editorial Board members to help lead a staff of writers, copy editors, reporters, photographers, videographers and graphic designers

 

• Packaged stories, planned and designed layout on Adobe InDesign and created graphics using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, reviewed drafts, suggested improvements, while writing stories that appear both online and in print in all sections of the newspaper
