The Appalachian

Throughout my college career, I have worked for the student-run newspaper, The Appalachian. I started off as a copy editor and then advanced to being the Chief Copy Editor from May 2019 - Dec. 2019. Then I was promoted to holding the position of Managing Editor until May 2020 when I graduated.

 

The Appalachian has been Appalachian State University’s student-run news publication since 1934. The organization publishes a print publication and films a news broadcast weekly. The Appalachian is the recipient of the ACP Pacemaker Award, the CMA Pinnacle Award and the NC College Media Association Best of Show award.

The Appalachian news group strives to provide fair and accurate news for the campus community; to inform, entertain and create a forum for ideas; to provide on outlet for reader’s opinions; to be a champion for student, faculty, staff, and community interests; and to remain independent, exercise and insure its First Amendment rights.

Being the Chief Copy Editor for The Appalachian allowed me to complete the following tasks:

​

• Supervised five copy editors on the Copy Desk while assigning stories to edit on deadline, after being a copy editor for three years              

• Led bi-weekly desk meetings and workshops to help improve copy editors’ grammar, AP Style, editing and fact-checking skills

Being the Managing Editor for The Appalachian allowed me to complete the following tasks:

​

• Assisted leading a weekly, national award-winning student news organization that reaches online, print, and broadcast news consumers in Watauga County, increasing news coverage across a campus of 20,000 students and the local community

 

• Collaborated daily with 16 Editorial Board members to help lead a staff of 60 to 80 writers, copy editors, reporters, photographers, videographers and graphic designers

 

• Packaged stories, planned and designed layout, reviewed drafts, suggested improvements, while writing news and arts and culture stories that appear both online and in print
