University Writing Center

I have worked at Appalachian State's University Writing Center throughout my freshman to senior years of college as a writing consultant.
The University Writing Center is a free resource available to all Appalachian State University students and faculty as well as members of the Boone community. Consultants are experienced writers and attentive readers who will work with clients one-on-one to assist with any aspect of the writing process. The UWC is a collaborative, supportive, and non-evaluative environment intended to help clients with their writing in a way that will foster confidence and competence. Consultants can provide assistance with writing at all stages and in any subject matter.
Being a writing consultant for the University Writing Center from August 2017 until August 2020 allowed me to complete the following tasks:
-
Worked one-on-one with students, faculty and staff, and members of the community in-person or online through Zoom to assist with any stage of the writing process from all areas of study and interests
-
Qualified to assist with all types of writing including assigned essays, academic research papers, personal or creative writing, business writing, presentations or multimodal projects, resumes, cover letters, and graduate school, grant or job applications
-
Familiar with documentation styles including Chicago Manual of Style, APA, MLA, and AP
-
Managed the University Writing Center’s social media accounts: Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook by creating graphics using Canva and content for posts
-
Filmed, edited, and produced promotional video using Adobe Premiere Pro and uploaded footage to YouTube
-
Involved in new hire search committee for night coordinator Spring 2019

Writing Tips

Happy #WritingTipWednesday! Annotating your sources can really help with understanding the material being researched, making it easier to organize your thoughts about the subject. In addition, you'd be able to find important ideas from the articles you've already read through. This can dramatically reduce the amount of stress and time it takes to write a paper because you're actually engaging and involved with your resources, rather than simply reviewing them.
Writing-Related Memes

To better catch errors, we recommend reading your paper aloud. It's easier to skim past mistakes when you've been staring at your computer screen for a while and reading in your head. It also helps to have a second set of eyes to look at your work. Make an online appointment to work with one of our consultants to further improve your writing! You can make an appointment by emailing writingctr@appstate.edu, calling/texting 828-476-8644, or visiting http://writingcenter.appstate.edu/. #WritingTipWednesday #appstateuwc

Don't let this be you! Stop by the UWC or schedule an appointment online at writingcenter.appstate.edu.

But if we really, really try, fetch might happen. Avoid procrastinating, and schedule an appointment with us! We can help writers in any stage of the writing process.

If this is you, you may want to stop by the UWC. We are more than happy to help you get started!

But if you feel stuck, you can always visit the UWC for help with the second draft!

We hope you have a great weekend!

Stay safe today if you are traveling, and enjoy your break! The UWC will open again on Wednesday, April 24.

Let us help you finish the semester strong!

Don't let this happen to you!! Our hours are Monday-Thursday 9am-9pm, and Friday from 9am-12pm. Happy #fridaythe13th and #funfriday
Word of the Weeks

Here's a Word of the Week today! 'Constellate,' which is pronounced as con-stel-late, is a verb that can be used in a sentence like this: "Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the public has been urged to not constellate." Black Lives Matter Movement

The staff of Appalachian State's University Writing Center condemn the violent killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and so many others at the hands of police officers. We recognize that such killings are the result of systemic racism and oppression that have persisted throughout American history. Calls for justice and reform are urgent and necessary. We believe Black lives matter, and we unequivocally support and stand in solidarity with our Black colleagues, students, and community members.

The staff at Appalachian State's University Writing Center believe Black lives matter. Our actions to help the cause include using our social media presence as a platform to utilize our voices to amplify the experience of Black individuals by sharing resources.

We encourage you to read and immerse yourselves in different forms of Black literature because the Black experience cannot be defined by one moment or incident. It's important to learn from a variety of narratives.
The Hate U Give is a 2017 young adult novel by Angie Thomas, and it follows a teenage girl who grapples with racism, police brutality, and activism after witnessing a white police officer murdering her Black friend. The novel holds strong themes of the power of language, community, and loyalty and the cycle of poverty and crime.
